The ACLU is our nation's guardian of liberty. We work daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.
"All that is necessary for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing."
"The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in time of moral crises maintain their neutrality." --Dante
Everything that the ACLU is able to do -- the extent of the commitment we are able to make to protect the enduring values embodied in the Constitution and civil rights laws -- will have an enormous impact on the freedoms that we are struggling to preserve for coming generations.
Defending First Amendment freedoms, equality, privacy rights, and fundamental fairness requires constant vigilance and support. Each year individuals and institutions, including foundations, unions, and corporations, demonstrate their commitment to those shared constitutional values through steady gifts and grants to the ACLU Foundation.
Although both the ACLU and the ACLU Foundation are part of the same overall organization, it is necessary to have two separate corporate entities of the ACLU to receive two separate types of funding. This allows for the over-arching support of all the ACLU's various activities.
Membership dues and gifts to the ACLU are not tax-deductible. This is because the ACLU engages in substantial legislative lobbying, which cannot, by law, be supported by tax deductible funds. The ACLU Foundation, on the other hand, conducts our litigation, education, and communications efforts; contributions to it are tax deductible.
Many donors choose to make their larger
tax deductible gifts to the ACLU Foundation and also make
smaller gifts to the ACLU in order to maintain their
status with the ACLU. To contribute, please fill out the
